Optimising your website for search engines
Here are 10 top-tips to give your website the best chance of being indexed properly
by search engines.
- The old rules are the best; don't use frames! We hate frames and so do search engines.
- Use a unique page title for every page. This title should be keyword rich and don't
include stop words (and, the, a, from) etc.
- Use unique keywords and descriptions on every page. If you don't want to write unique
meta tags, then don't use them at all. No tags are better than dupliate ones! Google
and the like will generate tags from your content instead.
- Use clean URLs. Don't use capital letters, spaces or special characters (hyphens
are read as spaces by search engines). Try to avoid querystrings or use a URL rewriter
if you do.
- Redirect the non-www version of the website, i.e. http://controlesc.com to http://www.controlesc.com
using a search-engine friendly 301/302 redirection.
- Try to avoid using Flash or images for navigation elements where possible. If you
have to use images, make sure you put alt tags in the source.
- Create a sitemap that contains links to every page you want indexed on the site.
These can be generated automatically in environments such as ASP.NET.
- Don't use Javascript to do internal linking. If you do, make sure you have HTML
links elsewhere on the page to achieve the same thing. Most search engine bots do
not support javascript!
- If you are redesigning a site, make sure to handle old pages that are still indexed
with generic friendly redirects (301/302).
- Don't cheat! Trying to cheat search engines will inevitably get you ranked down.
The best way to have a good site is to have good content.
